The night was hard without Annabell. No cuddles. No play time. No abandoned house in the woods. Nevertheless Matilda was going to go out into the woods and pay the old abandoned house in the woods a visit. Once all the lights were off and Matilda could hear Mr. Morris snoring, she hopped off the bed she was resting on and walked through the open door and into the hallway. Matilda walked down the creaky steps and into the foyer, where she opened the front door to the street. She walked past houses, big and small. She walked by trees wide and thin, until finally she reached the woods. Matilda walked about two miles, deep into the woods to find a small wooden home that was always a second home to her. Matilda walked up the broken steps and touched the doorknob. She had never been in the house before, but she was always eager too. She turned the doorknob and stepped inside. The house was beautiful to Matilda. It might have not been as pleasant to a human, but it was certainly pleasant to a doll. All of the memories Matilda had with Annabell came flooding back to her. She thought about all the times they went to this very house and rocked outside in the rocking chairs. Every time they came, Annabell would stick her face in the window and try to see the inside of the house through all the muck on the windows. And every time they came, Annabell would fall asleep, and Matilda would have to carry her heavy body back to her house. It smelled like a frog in the house. When she stepped into the hallway of the house, she made sure she kept the door open. She went farther down into the hallway and the door slammed shut behind her. She wasn’t surprised though, it was just a typical day. She turned the corner into the kitchen where there was a cauldron. She turned around to go explore the rest of the house but stopped when she found a woman staring right at her. Matilda squealed. “It’s okay. I’m Agnes,” said the woman in a sweet tone. “H-h-hi. I’m Matilda. And yes, I am a doll.” “I know!” Agnes said in a low voice different from the one she used to introduce herself. And with that, Agnes grabbed for Matilda, and everything went black.
